Navigating Grief and Loss: A Guide to Your Healing Journey

  • By Nancy Nzioki | Lead Psychologist Mombasa
Navigating Grief and Loss: A Guide to Your Healing Journey

Grief is a natural and universal response to loss. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a job, a relationship, or a sense of who you once were, the pain can feel overwhelming. You may feel like you’re on a roller coaster of emotions, and it’s easy to feel lost, alone, and unsure of how to move forward.

This guide will help you understand the process of grief and provide insight into the journey toward healing.

Understanding Your Grief Journey

Grief is deeply personal and has no set timeline. It’s not a straight line, but a complex process with many ups and downs. While a person’s experience is unique, many people find it helpful to understand some common stages and feelings that may arise:

  • Denial: In the initial moments of loss, you may feel numb or in a state of disbelief. Your mind may be protecting you from the full weight of the pain.
  • Anger: As the reality of the loss sets in, feelings of anger can arise. This anger might be directed at yourself, others, or even the person you lost. It’s a powerful and normal part of the process.
  • Bargaining: You may find yourself making deals with yourself or a higher power, wishing you could turn back time. This is often an attempt to regain a sense of control over a helpless situation.
  • Depression: As the bargaining fades, you may be left with a deep feeling of sadness. You might feel withdrawn, empty, or a lack of motivation. This is a natural response to the pain of your loss.
  • Acceptance: This stage doesn’t mean you’re “over” your grief. It means you are beginning to accept the reality of the loss and are ready to start building a new life with it. It’s about learning to live with the pain, not forgetting it.

It’s important to remember that these feelings can come and go in any order. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.

When to Seek Professional Help

While grief is a natural process, there are times when it can become overwhelming and requires professional support. You should consider speaking with a counselor if you notice:

  • You feel stuck in a specific stage of grief for an extended period.
  • Your grief is interfering with your daily life, work, or relationships.
  • You are experiencing physical symptoms like constant fatigue, trouble sleeping, or changes in appetite.
  • You are using unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as alcohol or substance abuse.
  • Your feelings of sadness or hopelessness are not improving over time.

A counselor provides a compassionate and non-judgmental space for you to process your emotions and develop healthy coping strategies. They can guide you through the complexities of your grief and help you find a path toward healing and peace.

If you are struggling with grief and loss, know that you do not have to walk this path alone. To learn more about how we can support you, please visit our Individual Counseling page.
